Description

Islands off Thrace, Thasos. Ca. 480-463 B.C. AR stater (21 mm, 8.66 g). Satyr advancing right, carrying protesting nymph / Quadripartite incuse square. Le Rider 5; SNG Copenhagen 1010-1; HGC 6, 331. Well centered and good metal. Good very fine.

Thasos was an economic powerhouse thanks to its exploitation of mines on the island and on the Thracian mainland which produced somewhere in the neighborhood of 200-300 talents per year. Its coinage circulated widely on the Thracian mainland and influenced the development of some local issues, most notably those attributed to 'Lete.'
