HARD TIMES TOKEN: 1838, Am I Not a Woman and a Sister, Anti-Slavery token. Cleaned, otherwise, VF- XF condition. These words appeared on abolitionist tokens that circulated in the US and in Great Britain. The American Anti-Slavery Society, located at 143 Nassau Street, New York, commissioned the firm of Gibbs Gardner & Co. of Belleville, N.J. to strike these copper tokens. the powerful image and words spoke of the plight of African Americans struggling for basic human rights while also calling attention to women's rights. The Hammer Price of this coin will be donated to Equal Justice Initiative.
