Description

Cilicia, Tarsos. Datames. Satrap of Cilicia and Cappadocia, 384-361/0 B.C. AR stater (22 mm, 9.64 g, 2 h). Ca. 370 B.C. 'BLTRZ' in Aramaic left, Baaltars seated right, torso facing, holding grain ear and grape-bunch in left hand, eagle-tipped scepter in right arm; thymiaterion to right; all within crenelated wall / TRDMW' in Aramaic, Ana, nude, facing Datames; both have their right arms raised; between them, thymiaterion; all within square square border within linear border. Casabonne type 3; Moysey issue 5; cf. SNG BN 298 (eagle below throne); SNG Levante -; SNG von Aulock 5948-9. Decent strike for the issue and light toning. Nice very fine.
