Anonymous. 211-210 B.C. AR quinarius (17 mm, 1.98 g, 11 h). Southeastern Italian mint. Head of Roma right, wearing winged Phrygian helmet; behind, denomination (V) / ROMA in exergue, the Dioscuri on horseback rearing right, each holding couched lance. Crawford 44/6; King 1; Sydenham 141; RSC 3. Pleasing old dark toning. Choice extremely fine.
With an old dealer envelope from Spink & Son, with handwritten notes stating that it comes from a hoard published in the 1972 Numismatic Chronicle.
C. Hersh notes in his article on the hoard from which this coin comes, that the D1 Phrygian helmet type, grouped by Sydenham under his no. 141 but more properly placed as pre-176 since the style is closely related to Sydenham 176 with L control on the reverse, was struck at a mint in southeastern Italy.
