Description

Syria, Coele-Syria. Demetrias by the Sea. 1st century B.C. Æ (20 mm, 6.58 g, 12 h). Turreted and veiled bust of Tyche right / Cornucopiae flanked by [LΑ] - ΔΗ. O. Hoover, "A Seleucid Coinage of Demetrias by the Sea", Israel Numismatic Research 2 (2007), pl. 14, 3. Extremely rare. Rough green patina. Poor / good fine.

Coins of Demetrias by the Sea, which became Caesarea Maritima, are extremely rare in any condition. We have been able to confirm just two other specimens sold in the past decade, both considerably nicer than the present coin, but both also selling for $1600 or more!
