Description

Sicily, Gela. Ca. 440-430 B.C. AR tetradrachm (23 mm, 17.52 g, 3'). Charioteer driving walking quadriga right; above, Nike flying right, crowning horses with wreath / [C]ELAS, forepart of man-headed bull right; water-plant or reed before. Cf. Jenkins group V, 389 (O79/R-; reverse die not listed). Good VF, areas of weakness, obverse a little off center. Reverse die of charmingly grotesque style.
