Description

Ionia, Smyrna. Ca. 115-105 B.C. Æ 'Homereum' (20 mm, 8.79 g, 1'). Pyrros, magistrate. Laureate head of Apollo right / [S]MURNAION, the poet Homer seated left, holding scroll, sceptre behind him; in left field, PURROS and ATE monogram. Milne 241; SNG Copenhagen 1148. VF, nice green patina, minor porosity.

We know the name of this coin, 'Homereum', because it is mentioned by Strabo, Geographica xiv, i.37: "...the Smyrnaeans also lay especial claim to the poet [Homer] and indeed a bronze coin of theirs is called a Homereum."
