Description

Roman Egypt. Antoninus Pius. A.D. 138-161. Æ drachm (33 mm, 25.03 g, 11'). Alexandria, year 17 (A.D. 153/4). Blundered legend, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust left / Emperor standing right, raising arm and holding sceptre, in slow quadriga right; above, L IZ. Milne -; Emmett 1508 var. (date). Good VF, brown patina with green overtones. Bold strike and extremely rare with this date.

Ex Triton VI (14-15 January 2003), 596.

The obverse legend on this coin is completely gobbledygook, making absolutely no sense whatsoever, while the rest of the engraving is of very competent style. This might lead us to wonder what exactly was involved in the application process for the position of die-engraver at the mint. And, if we take it a step further, when his game was up, was the culprit simply dismissed from the position, or was he crucified?
