Description

Vandals in Sardinia. Local issue. Ca. A.D. 450-460. Æ nummus (9 mm, 0.60 g, 1'). Diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right / Star of eight rays within wreath. MSV 185-91; BMC p. 38, 165-72, pl. IV, 31; MEC 33. VF, green patina. Exceptional for issue.

According to G. Lulliri and M. Bonaria Urban in Le monete della Sardegna vandalica, (MSV) this type dates from the very beginning of Gunthamund's reign. It is not a regal issue but rather a crudely manufactured local product used for small change in Sardinia and North Africa. This particular example is far superior to the several specimens illustrated in the reference works cited.
