Islands off Caria, Rhodes. Ca. 205-190 B.C. AR drachm (15 mm, 2.67 g, 12 h). Gorgos, magistrate. Head of Helios facing / P-O, rose with bud to right; above, magistrate's name: ΓOPΓOY; in left field, bow in gorytos. Cf. Ashton 288. cf. SNG Keckman 582-4. Perfectly centered and struck in high relief. Superb extremely fine.
A pseudo-Rhodian drachm from the large production of coinage struck by the Macedonians under King Perseus to pay the Cretan and Rhodian mercenaries in his employ. This particular coin differs significantly from other drachms issued by the magistrate Gorgos in that the portrait of Helios is fully frontal as opposed to facing slightly right or left, and also in that Gorgos's name is inscribed in the genitive (ΓΟΡΓΟΥ), as opposed to nominative (ΓΟΡΓΟΣ), form.
