Description
Judaea, Herodian Kingdom. Herod II Archelaus. 4 B.C.E.-6 C.E. Æ prutah (16 mm, 1.50 g, 12 h). Jerusalem, ca. A.D. 1. HPω-[ΔOY], grape bunch on vine, small leaf on left / ЄΘ[NAPXOY], tall crested helmet with cheek guards; to lower left, caduceus. TJC 73a; Hendin 1196; RPC 4917. Pleasing earthen patina. Very fine.
Archelaus' coins do not bear the title 'King' as did the coins of his father Herod I. Surely Archelaus desired a kingship, but after sailing to Rome for an appearance before Caesar Augustus he was granted only the title of 'Ethnarch.'
