Description
Ptolemaic Kingdom. Ptolemy I Soter. As King, 305-282 B.C. AR tetradrachm (26 mm, 14.20 g, 12 h). Alexandria. Diademed head of Ptolemy I right, aegis tied at neck; smsll Δ behind ear / BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΠTOΛEMAIOY, eagle with folded wings standing left on thunderbolt; P and monogram in left field. Svoronos 255; SNG Copenhagen 70. Toned, a few light scratches. Very fine.
Behind the eagle is a small series of zig-zag scratches that are often found on Ptolemaic tetradrachms. It had to have been some sort of control mark, but I have never seen a satisfactory explanation for them
