Description

MARCUS AURELIUS. 161-180 AD. Æ As (27mm - 11.20 g). Rome mint. Struck 177 AD. M ANTONINVS AVG GERM SARM TR P XXXI, laureate head right / IMP VIII / FELICITATI / AVG P P, in three lines above COS III below, Neptune, holding dolphin and trident, standing left on prow of galley being rowed left by four oarsmen. RIC III 1192 var.; BMCRE 1618ff var. Nice VF, brown patina with some green deposits, minor roughness.

It appears as though every die for this issue is a different variety, with various spacing of the reverse legends, various numbers of rowers and Neptune in different locations holding different items. BMC lists 13 different varieties, but not this exact reverse. One could almost make a collection out of just this one type.
