Description

CARAUSIUS. 287-293 AD. Antoninianus (22mm - 4.30 g). London mint. IMP C CARAVSIVS P F AVG, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / PAX [A]-VGGG, Pax standing left, holding branch in right hand, transverse scepter in left; S-P//MLXXI. RIC V 143. Nice VF/VF, dark brown patina with a hint of gray, some light roughness, nice portrait style.

Unlike usurpers of the past, Carausius recognized the legitimacy of the other two emperors, Diocletian and Maximianus, a favor that was not returned. This recognition took several forms, the striking of coins in the name of Diocletian and Maximianus, the striking of coins with a triple portrait of the three emperors and, as on this coin, the use of the formula AVGGG.
