Description

COMMODUS. 177-192 AD. AR Imitation Denarius (15mm - 2.34 g). Bust of Commodus as Hercules right, wearing lion skin / Bow, club and quiver; four pellets below. Cf. RIC III 253; cf. BMCRE 343; cf. RSC 195. Near VF.

The reverse legend appears to be engraved correctly and the obverse legend is not too terribly blundered. The portrait is nice and the reverse is just a little simplified. The flan appears to be good silver, so this may be a Celtic imitation versus an ancient counterfeit. The pellets on the reverse and the obverse containing the circle with center pellet are provocatively Celtic designs.
