Description
SEPTIMIUS SEVERUS. 193-211 AD. AR Denarius (18mm - 2.85 g). Emesa mint. Struck 194 AD. IMP CAE L SEP SE-V PERT AVG COS II, laureate head right / VICT-OR AVG, Victory walking left, holding wreath in right hand, palm in left. RIC IV 425; BMCRE 396; RSC 697. EF.
An interesting obverse die. At first glance this appears to be a COS I die, in fact this cataloguer originally cataloged it as such, but I was a bit confused as the portrait style was not like the COS I dies. Upon further study, under a microscope, it became apparent that this is actually a COS II die, with the S in COS engraved over the first I.
