Description
5th-4th centuries B.C. Æ cast axe head (14x12x27 mm, 25.51 g). Cast leaded-bronze in the form of a small axe head used for exchange, and broken in antiquity to make change. Green patina. Very fine.
Bronze axe heads were used for exchange across Europe even before 1000 B.C. This broken fragment dates much later, probably to ca. 5th-4th centuries B.C. It was never used to cut wood but was cast to serve as currency, and was broken for change. This particular example is of roughly uncia weight.
