Description

Septimius Severus. A.D. 193-211. AR denarius (17 mm, 3.35 g, 7 h). Emesa, A.D. 195. IMP CAE L SEP SEV PER AVG COS II, laureate head of Septimius Severus right / S P Q R OPTIMO PBINCIPI (sic), emperor on horseback left, holding spear. Cf. RIC 415; cf. BMC 389; cf. RSC 652. Toned. Very fine.

From the Maple Leaf Collection.

Although not mentioned in the standard references for Septimius, this variety with the engraver's error on the reverse misspelling PRINCIPI is considerably more common than the variety where it is spelled correctly.

The coin is reportedly from the 24 January 1959 auction of Hans M. F. Schulman, but we have been unable to substantiate this.
