Description

A Roman crème buff Mortarium, or mixing bowl, c. 2nd - 3rd Century AD, with rounded interior, sloping shoulder and a triangular spout. The vessel sits on a low ring foot and two hole in the back of the rim are for suspension. L: 9 ¾” (24.7 cm); H: 2 5/8” (6.8 cm). Intact with traces of slip around the shoulder. The pottery mortarium was used with a pestle for grinding and pounding foods and would have been used in the Roman kitchen. Many are found nearly worn through the bowl, but this example shows light wear from minimal use. Ex Los Angeles private collection. Value Range $500 - $700.
