Description

India, Ceylon (Ancient Sri Lanka). Ca. 4th century A.D. Æ coin (13 mm, 1.21 g). King’s bust right / Soldier spearing horseman right. MACW 5165ff (this type not listed). A contemporary imitation of the FEL TEMP REPARATIO AE3's minted by Constantius II, Constantius Gallus and Julian II in the mid-4th century. Rare and interesting. .

The Roman imports of exotic goods and spices from the Indian subcontinent in the early centuries AD were paid for in Roman coins that flooded south India from the 1st century AD onwards. Traders in Ceylon were therefore familiar with Roman copper coins, and contemporary imitations were made to cater to the local demand for coinage.
