India, Gupta empire. Skandagupta. ruled Ca. A.D. 455-480. AR drachm (1 mm, 1.63 g). King's bust right / Fire altar in centre, with Brahmi legend around Parama-bhagavata Sri Skanda(gupta Krama)ditya. Pieper 874. An attractive specimen with a bold strike. Scarce and choice. .
This is the fire altar type of Skandagupta, a numismatic innovation started by him late in his reign, that replaced the normal Garuda symbol on reverse with a Hindu fire altar.
