Description

India, Vardhanas of Thanesar and Kanauj. Harsha Vardhana. ruled Ca. A.D. 606-647. AR drachm (13.5 mm, 2.28 g). King's head left, wearing a crescent crown; traces of Brahmi legend to left / Fan-tailed Garuda standing facing left, with Brahmi legend (Vijitavanir-avanapa)ti sri Siladitya divam ja(yati) around. MACW 4933-7. This specimen has Harsha’s royal name Siladitya clearly visible on reverse. Rare and choice. .

Harsha is the famous king who reunited northern India after the collapse of the Gupta empire. A Mahayana Buddhist, he promoted all faiths under his tolerant rule.  In 643 AD, he held a Buddhist convocation in Kanauj, which was attended by 20 kings and thousands of Buddhist scholars and pilgrims.
