Description
Bishop Stephen of Maiuma of Ascalon.Early 6th century AD. PB Bulla (seal) (24mm - 13.69 g). +CT EΦA NOV / +EΠ ICKO ΠOV. VF, brownish patina. Rare Holy Land seal.
Ex Classical Numismatic Group E-151, lot 281.
The simple inscriptions on this seal place it early in the Byzantine period- 5th-6th century. It was found in the near east, and these two facts make it likely that the seal was made for Stephen of Maiuma (the port of Ascalon, made a separate See in the early 6th century). Stephen is recorded as participating in the synod at Jerusalem in 518.
