Description

THRACE. Philippensium. Divus Trajan. Struck under Gallienus (?). Æ 24mm (9.15 g). DIVO TRAIANO, radiate head right / HERO AVLONITE, RPCP below, the Hero Aulonites on horseback right, brandishing a lance. Amandry, "Le Monnayage de la Res Publica Coloniae Philippensium," in Essays to Schonert-Geiss, 3 (D2/R1). VF, green patina with some deposits, old scuff on cheek. Very Rare, only two recorded by Amandry.

The city of Philippensium struck only a small issue of coinage, all Divus types. Amandry records only 22 coins struck in the names of Divus Augustus, Divus Trajan and Divus Marcus Aurelius. Only 3 obverse dies recorded, one for each ruler, and reverse die links show that these coins were all struck at the same time. This cataloger has never seen another coin from this city and there are none on Coin Archives or Wildwinds.
