Description
Kumaragupta. Ca. A.D. 415-450. AR drachm (14.5 mm, 1.43 g). King's bust facing right with traces of date to right; slight cleaning marks / Fan-tailed peacock facing with wings spread, with Brahmi legend around: (Vijita) vanir avanipati Kumara Gupto (divam jayati) (Having conquered the Earth and the lords of the Earth, Kumara Gupta wins the Heavens). MACW 4859-60. Very rare. Toned. Nearly fine.
This is the rare Madhyadesa type of portrait silver coins, issued by the Gupta emperors in the core imperial territory of modern-day Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. This specimen has the king's name Kumara Gupto clearly visible on reverse.
A similar specimen sold for $770 at an Indian auction in 2014.
