Description
Toramana II. Ca. A.D. 530-570. Æ stater (19 mm, 6.71 g). King standing, sacrificing at fire altar, with Brahmi legend Sri Tora(mana) at left along circular margin / Goddess Lakshmi (proto-Durga) seated on a lion left, holding a long-stemmed lotus, one hand raised in benediction, with kalasha (sacred vessel) to left. Mitchiner, Non-Islamic 151. Rare and choice. Dark brown patina. Very fine.
Lakshmi seated on a lion is an important iconographic development, a key transition to the Goddess Durga of medieval Hinduism.
