Description
7th-8th centuries A.D. Zn unit (12 mm, 2.35 g). Stylized Garuda seated facing / Traces of legend?. Not listed in any catalog. Very rare. Earthen-green patina. Very fine.
This is the earliest zinc coin issued in the Indian subcontinent. Similar specimens were collected by Alexander Cunningham from the Himachal Pradesh area in the 19th century. It is still not known who issued this coin type. Perhaps an early medieval ruler issued these for local use in his territory, using the motifs typical of the post-Guptas.
