Description

India, Amirs of Multan. Munnabih I. Ca. A.D. 912-913. AR dramma (9 mm, .53 g). Sharda legend (Sri) Adi/varaha / Arabic legend Lillah Munnabih at bottom, with three-dot motif above. This is the first series after the Arab invasion of Multan. It carried bilingual legends in order to be accepted by the local Hindu population. This also marks a fascinating attempt by the new Arab rulers to invoke Hindu gods to legitimise their rule.Munnabih takes the title Sri Adivaraha, drawing on the boar avatar of Lord Vishnu. This name also refers to the powerful Gurjura-Pratihara ruler Bhoja I (836-885 AD), who used the name Adivaraha on his coins.
