Description
India, Deccan and western India. Ca. 18th century A.D. AR bracteate (32x22 mm, 1.67 g). 4-armed goddess Kaumari seated on peacock left, holdng scimitar, axe and sword; all within ornamental border. / This deity is not recorded by Mitchiner. For other Hindu bracteates please see Mitchiner (1998), pp. 49-64.. A choice specimen and important for Hindu iconography. .
A very unusual piece that was used for votive purposes and also as a pendant. Goddess Kaumari (also called Kumari or Kartikeyani) is the shakti (female form) of Kartikkeya, the Hindu God of War. This goddess is famous in her Jagdamba form, killing rakshasas (demons) with her axe.
