Anglo-Saxon, Kings of Wessex. Edward the Elder. 899-924. AR penny (23 mm, 1.52 g, 5 h). Circumscription cross/Horizontal (HT1) type, BMC ii. Ealhstan, moneyer. +EADVVEARD REX, small cross / EALHS/TAN MO, legend in two lines divided by three crosses; trefoil above and below. CTCE 177; SCBI 9 (Asmolean), 298 var. (pellets, not trefoils, on rev.); SCBI 26 (East Anglia) 138; North 649; SCBC 1087. Slight wave in flan, some light deposits. Very fine.
