Description

Anglo-Saxon, Kings of All England. Aethelstan I. 924-939. AR penny (21 mm, 1.51 g, 12 h). Two line type (HT1), BMC i. Are, moneyer. + ÆÐELSTAN REX, small cross / ARE M/ONETA (the N retrograde), legend in two lines divided by three crosses; pellet above, trefoil below. Cf. Blunt 370 (different style); cf. SCBI 34 (BM) 199-201; cf. North 668/1b; cf. SCBC 1089; EMC 2001.0018 = Coin Register (BNJ 2001), 69 (this coin). Very rare. Toned, some minor chipping on edge, metal still strong though. Very fine.

Found in Ashwell, Hertfordshire, in 2001.

This coin is from the moneyer Are. All of the known coins with the moneyer Are are from what Blunt calls NE 1 mint which normally have large, chunky lettering, whereas this coin has the more normal small lettering. This coin also has just a single pellet above the moneyer's name and a trefoil below, instead of the usual trefoil/trefoil. Coins of Aethelstan are recorded with trefoil/pellet, but not the other way around.
