Description
India, Ancient north India. Bhanumitra. Ca. 1st-2nd Century A.D. Æ half unit (15 mm, 2.81 g). Goddess Lakshmi standing facing; 8-arched hill to left and fire altar to right; Brahmi legend (Rajno) Bhanumitrasya above / Tree-in-railing. NOT listed in Mitchiner and Pieper. An unattributed series, this is similar to Mathura in its depiction of Lakshmi, while similar to Panchala in fabric. Extremely rare and historically important.
Bhanumitra is known from only one hoard that contained his coins. Nothing else is known of this enigmatic king.
