Description

India, Gupta empire. Chandragupta II. ruled Ca. A.D. 375-414. PB square unit (15 mm, 4.05 g). Garuda standing facing with wings outstretched / Brahmi legend Sri Vikrama. Pieper 886. Lead coins of the Gupta emperors are difficult to find in good condition. This heavy specimen has Chandragupta II's royal name Vikrama clearly visible. Rare and choice.

Chandragupta II (Vikramaditya) began issuing lead coins after he conquered Gujarat, following the existing coinage of the Western Kshatrapas whom he defeated. Khandragupta II's lead coins are much rarer than those of his successors Kumaragupta and Skandagupta.
