Description

ANTONINUS PIUS. 138-161 AD. Æ Sestertius (31mm - 24.66 g). Rome mint. Struck 157 AD. ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P IMP II, laureate head right / TR POT XX COS IIII, LIB VII across fields, S-C low in fields, Liberalitas standing left, holding abacus in right hand, cornucopia in left. RIC III -; BMCRE -; Cohen -; Banti -. Near VF, black surfaces with tan high points.

A similar type exists with the date TR POT XXI and LIB VIII, struck in 158 AD. The Banti plate coin for this variety (#219) appears to share the same obverse die as this coin, raising the possibility that this is actually dated TR PO XXI with the I weak and the I at the end of VII also weak, in which case this would be RIC 987. If that is the case, this may be the second recorded example of this reverse type (Banti only recorded 1 specimen).
