Description

PAMPHYLIA. Sillyum. Gallienus. 253-268 AD. Æ 32mm (10.67 g). Laureate and draped bust left / Mên standing right, crescent on shoulders, holding scepter in right hand, pine-cone in left. Cf. SNG France 1005 (same obverse die, different type, incorrectly identified as Valerian); SNG von Aulock -; SNG Copenhagen -. Near VF, grayish-brown patina, typical surface roughness, weak obverse legends, finely styled obverse die.

The authors of SNG France incorrectly identify this obverse die as being a die of Valerian I. Like that coin, this coin exhibits similar weakness in the obverse legend but enough is visible to identify this as Gallienus. Before the bust, one can make out LLIHNOC which can only be Gallienus.
