Description

LUCANIA. Velia. Circa 440/435-400 BC. AR Nomos (20mm - 7.37 g). Helmeted head of Athena right, helmet decorated with griffin / Lion attacking stag to the right. Williams 154 (O103/R120); SNG Lockett 545 (same dies); SNG Copenhagen 1535 (same dies); HN 1270. VF, toned, surfaces a little grainy.

Unusual representation of the lion attacking the stag, with the lion in front of the stag biting it in the neck, the lion's body nearly completely blocking the stags body from view. The normal representation has the lion on the stag's back. This representation is shown only on Williams 153-156, struck from 3 reverse dies.
