Description

IONIA. Metropolis. Trajan. 98-117 AD. Æ 22mm (6.23 g). Laureate head right; c/m: ΔAK / Cybele seated left, holding patera; IΩNIA. BMC Ionia -; SNG von Aulock -; SNG Cop. -; SNG Munich 664 (same obverse die); Howgego 530 (for countermark). Nice VF, dark gray patina.

The ΔAK counterstamp is almost always found applied to the end of the obverse legend. It presumably was applied shortly after Trajan's assumption of the title Dacicus in late 102 AD. This is one of the few issues in the provincial series that actually spells out the name of the Province, in this case Ionia.
