This early silver nomos from Taras in Calabria was formerly in the collection of George C. Brauer, a noted professor of English at the University of South Carolina and author of several good books on ancient history and coinage. Perhaps his most recognized works to historians and coin aficionados are his The decadent emperors: power and depravity in third-century Rome (1967), Judaea weeping: the Jewish struggle against Rome from Pompey to Masada, 63 B.C. to A.D. 73 (1970), and Taras: its history and coinage (1986), although he wrote other works and contributed several short papers on numismatic topics to various journals. He purchased this coin in 1957 from a Kricheldorf auction, and it reentered the market when NFA sold his collection in 1988. It is illustrated in his book on Taras, p. 44, fig. 13.
