Description

Sicily, Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny. 485-466 B.C. AR tetradrachm (23 mm, 17.37 g, 5 h). Under Hieron I, ca. 480/78-475 B.C. Charioteer, holding kentron and reins, driving slow quadriga right; above, Nike flying right, crowning horses / ΣVRA-KOΣI-OИ, diademed head of Arethusa right; around, four dolphins. Boehringer grp. III, series XI, - (V11/R-; unrecorded rev. die); Randazzo 418 (same dies); SNG ANS -. Lightly toned and well centered, reverse die showing signs of die deterioration. Very fine.
