Description
A decorated Pre-Dynastic jar, Nagada II, c. 3800 - 3300 BC, the body with high shoulder and rounded base, the rim even with thick lip. The decoration consists of 3 or 4 brush strokes with red-brown slip applied together, similar to the claw marks of a lion. Some repair, but a rare type and seldom offered. H: 5 ¾” (14.6 cm). Cf. Petrie, Prehistoric Egypt (1920-1), pl. xxxii, no. 26 for the type and markings. Ex Los Angeles private collection. Value range $850-$950.
