Sicily, Naxos. Ca. 460 B.C. AR tetradrachm (26 mm, 14.72 g, 10 h). British Museum electrotype by Robert Ready (R stamped on edge). Bearded head of Dionysos to right, wreathed with ivy and with his hair tied in a krobylos at the back / Ν-ΑΧΙ-ΟΝ, bearded and ithyphallic Silenos squatting facing, head left, holding stemless two-handled drinking cup at shoulder. Cf. Kraay & Hirmer 6; cf. Rizzo pl. XXIX, 1; cf. SNG ANS 515 (all same dies). Made from the best dies of this highly important issue. Toned. Choice extremely fine.
