Description

India, Indo-Danish. Frederik III. 1648-1670. Æ 1 cash (9 mm, .61 g). Tranquebar. Crowned F.3 monogram of Frederik III / Crowned Norse lion, holding halberd. MNI 1542-43; KM 118.1; UBJ 143. A rare early issue of the Danish colony. This small copper denomination was struck from 1667-1670. Rare.

The Danes made their first appearance in India in 1618, when the Danish East India Company began trading near Tanjore under a royal charter. They set up a mint at the port of Tranquebar, which remained in Danish possession till the 19th century.
