Seleukid Kingdom. Alexander I Balas. 152/1-145 B.C. Æ (12 mm, 1.36 g, 12 h). Berytos. Diademed head of Alexander I right / Dolphin coiled about trident; in left field, A/Λ; in right field, Φ-O monogram/E. SC 1827; Z. Sawaya, "Le monnayage municipal séleucide de Bérytos (169/8-114/3? av. J.-C.)," NC (2004), 95-104 (uncertain dies); Hoover 942. Extremely rare and exceptionally well preserved. Far superior to all of the examples illustrated in Sawaya. A gem of a little coin! Black patina. Choice extremely fine.
One of the benefits of collecting Seleukid bronzes is that rarities like this coin can be acquired for relatively inexpensively. There exist approximately 8-10 times as many Eid Mar denarii as there are of this type, yet Eid Mar denarii sell for a fortune - but perhaps that is simply the cost of the wow!-factor.
