Description
Pontus, Sebastopolis-Heracleopolis. Julia Domna. Augusta, A.D. 193-217. Æ tetrassarion (28 mm, 16.41 g, 10 h). CY 208 (A.D. 205/6). Draped bust of Julia Domna right / Herakles and the Apples of the Hesperides: Herakles advancing left, holding club at hip, reaching for the Apples of the Hesperides hanging from branch of tree to left; the serpent Ladon coiled about the tree’s trunk. Amandry and Remy 33 (D12/R30), otherwise unpublished. Extremely rare - one of just two specimens known, the other formerly in the collection of S. Burstein. Olive-green patina, light deposits. Very fine.
