- Sold Winning Bid: $390
- 2 Bid(s)
Date: 238-244 AD
Obverse: Laureate draped cuirassed bust of Gordian right, with mark from damaged die
Reverse: City gate with two towers and three doors, niche above central door contains Helios with rays of sun streaming from his head.
Attribution: Unlisted for this exact reverse type.
Grade: near Extremely Fine
Weight: 7.78 grs.
Measure: 26.48 mm.
Notes:
The mark on the obverse is not a double strike, but damage in the die itself. It is Jurokova die V260, which is paired with 5 other reverse types: Demeter, Apollo, Herakles, Nemesis, and a city wall with just one arch. All show the same crescent shaped damage on the obverse which must be a heavy clash from contact with a reverse die. This reverse type with a triple-arched wall is not listed in Jurokova for this obverse and is a new variety. Ex Ray Wilk architectural collection.
