Description

Persia; Civic Copper (2.16 gm; 18 mm). obverse; fulus-e "(Qand)ahar" or "Ahar" (present day Azerbaijan), reverese ornate cross in quadrofoil. If the mint is Ahar the city was the capital of Karadag Khanate in the 18th and 19th century which ended by the advent of Qajar dynasty. Extremely rare, no date, typically Christian symbol of Cross is extremely rare in majority Moslem Persia. However such symbols such as Saint George has been seen on the various Cities who received many Christian refugees during the Russo-Persian wars. Brown reddish patina. Choice EF.
