Description

CONSTANTIUS II. 337-361 AD. Æ Centenionalis (23mm - 5.54 g). Trier mint. D N CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVG, pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right / SALVS AVG NOSTRI, large Christogram flanked by A-W; TRP*. RIC VIII332; LRBC 67. Nice VF, attractive green patina, some roughness around the edges, and a few small breaks in the patina. Rare.

This rare issue is struck in the name of Constantius II and uses reverse types normally associated with Magnentius and Decentius. Kent and others have tried to associate this issue with Poemenius who revolted against Magnentius and Decentius and handed Trier over to Constantius II, striking this issue of bronze and a related gold issue in anticipation of Constantius taking the city. In 1983 (QT), Bastien examined this issue and concluded that it was stuck only after Constantius took over control of Trier. More recently, Holt (2004 AJN) concluded that Kent was basically correct. So the circumstances of this issue still remains unresolved, but in either case this issue is directly related to the revolt in Trier.
