Description

Julius Caesar. 49-48 B.C. AR denarius (18 mm, 2.94 g, 12 h). Mobile military mint in Gaul. CAESAR in exergue, elephant walking right, trampling serpent / Priestly implements: simpulum, aspergillum, securis and apex. Crawford 443/1; HCRI 9; Sydenham 1006; RSC 49. Fine, bankers' marks on elephant, porous and crystalized, edge chip.

While the reverse clearly refers to Caesar's status as pontifex maximus, the precise meaning of the obverse type is unclear. It has been variously interpreted as a general allegory of the triumph of good over evil and, in more specific terms, as a symbolic representation of the planned victory of the Caesarean forces over the Pompeians.
