Description

Aspavarma. 1st century B.C. BI drachm (13 mm, 2.27 g). King mounted on a horse right, holding up a whip, with Greek legend around / Pallas Athena standing right, holding spear, with Kharoshthi legend around Imtravarmaputrasa Aspava(rmasa) stratega. Senior 182.1D. The drachm denomination is hard to find. Rated as R2 (Very Rare) by HGC. This specimen has Aspavarma's name clearly visible on reverse. Very rare and choice. Nearly very fine.

Aspavarma was the son of Indravarma, the founder of the Apracharaja dynasty that ruled in the Bajaur region. Since this coin names him as a strategos (viceory), it is possible that he ruled in the name of the powerful Indo-Parthian overlord Gondophares.
