Sri Satakarni. 1st century B.C. Æ coin (11 mm, 1.75 g). Elephant advancing left with trunk raised; indradhjava and swastika above; Brahmi legend (Siri) Sata(kani)sa on top / Swastikas in quadrant, with multiple Ujjain symbols around. Not listed in any catalog. This unrecorded Kotalingala type was issued by Sri Satakarni. The elephant's raised trunk, along with indradhvaja and swastika above, have not been seen on any specimen so far. Extremely rare and choice, probably unique. Nearly very fine.
Kotalingala coins are all very rare. This city in modern-day Andhra Pradesh is considered the first capital of the Telugu people. It may have been the homeland of the Satavahana kings before they expanded their empire across the Deccan.
